Apple iOS 11 Update – How is your mobile fleet affected

While the new iOS 11 update for Apple devices has many new bells and whistles, the main disadvantage is that the update is not applicable to all Apple models – see the complete model list below. The update is only compatible with the newer iPhone, iPad and iPod series which work on the 64 bit operating system, with the main disadvantage being security protections will not be updated.

Why is my device not compatible?

Older devices run on the 32 bit operating system as do older downloaded applications. Apple is no longer providing support for these devices or Apps. While devices will still work without the iOS 11 upgrade, there could possibly be issue going forward with the functionality of the device. Less of an issue are Apps with 32 bit code as many are already coded to work with the newer 64 bit systems – requirement by the App Store since 2015.

What does this really mean for your mobile fleet?

It means that devices in your fleet will likely start to show decreases in performance. It’s difficult to predict the severity, but each iOS update brings new fixes and the latest security protection. Without this protection, issues could start to arise.

What are the options for your company?

It’s probably time to start thinking about either upgrading current Apple models or switching to an android solution. Important to note however, android devices also need updating and are dependent on additional antivirus software for security protection. Weighing up all your options for the longevity of your mobile fleet is recommended.
